Out In The World:
Ireland's LGBTQ+ Diaspora

Across the generations, Irish LGBTQ+ people have emigrated and found opportunities to live and love abroad. EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum, in partnership with the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs, are proud to play a role in illuminating this hidden history of Irish emigration.

Across six themes—exclusion, community, love, defiance, solidarity and return—Out in the World highlights twelve stories from the vast history of Ireland’s LGBTQ+ diaspora. The exhibition also features an artwork by award-winning Irish designer and multi-disciplinary artist Richard Malone.

Visit the exhibition in Dublin from June to December 2021 at EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum. Visit Out in the World for free during Dublin Pride from June 8 to July 1 and get free entry with a ticket to EPIC from July 2 to December 1. The exhibition will also tour to select locations across the world.

The exhibition was the largest to date funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with EPIC, and as such included additional elements.

A story wall and accompanying website encourages visitors to share their own stories; the wall uses colour-coded magnets for ease of display.

The exhibition film features interviews shot with three Irish diaspora members in San Francisco, London and Sydney, shot by local videographers and remotely supervised by videoconference.

Richard Malone's artwork was designed collaboratively, with DMW specifying the materials, producing 3d visualisations to aid stakeholders, and supervising production of Richard's custom-shot photography. The artwork is designed to replicated and flat-packed for shipment to other Irish embassy locations worldwide.
